DiscussionRevisions

A heritage Psilocybe cubensis lineage with origins attributed to the Amazon basin; considered an ancestor to several widely distributed modern varieties.

§ 01Morphology

Amazonian produces medium-to-large fruiting bodies with cinnamon- to reddish-brown caps reaching 40–90 mm at maturity, typically flattening broadly with a slight central umbo. The stipe is robust, off-white, and produces a pronounced blue-green bruise on handling.

The underlying mycelium is noted for vigorous, rhizomorphic growth across grain substrates — a trait that has made the lineage a preferred genetic parent in subsequent breeding programmes.

§ 02Origin & Naming

The Amazonian lineage is widely cited as a progenitor to a significant portion of commercially circulated P. cubensis genetics, including Penis Envy and, by less direct descent, the Golden Teacher line. Community sources attribute its early collection and distribution to ethnobotanical fieldwork conducted in the Amazon basin during the 1970s, with Terence McKenna among the named collectors.

The PES suffix — "Pacifica Exotica Spora" — refers to an early North American distributor whose Amazonian stocks shaped subsequent hobbyist collections and whose catalogue entries are occasionally still cited.

§ 03Cultivation Temperament

Amazonian colonises grain rapidly and fruits prolifically under standard P. cubensis conditions (23–26 °C, 85–95% RH). It is commonly described as one of the more vigorous varieties available and is frequently selected as a parent stock for crosses targeting yield.

Tolerance to environmental fluctuation is high; the variety will often fruit where more sensitive cultivars abort, though flush timing can be irregular compared to stabilised heritage lines.

§ 04Safety Profile

As with all psilocybin-containing species, Amazonian carries significant contraindications. Psilocybin is a serotonergic compound and interacts with a range of medications and mental-health conditions.

⚠ Contraindications

Not suitable for individuals with personal or family history of psychotic disorders, schizophrenia, or bipolar I; those taking SSRIs, MAOIs, or lithium; pregnant or breastfeeding persons; or those with unmanaged cardiovascular conditions. Always review the full safety codex before use.
