DiscussionRevisions1

A Psilocybe cubensis variety with distinctive dense, club-shaped morphology and reputed above-average tryptamine content; lineage traced to Terence McKenna's Amazonian collection.

§ 01Morphology

Penis Envy is immediately distinguishable by its dense, phallic morphology: a thick, club-shaped stipe bearing a small, rounded cap that often fails to open fully and retains a persistent partial veil. Colouration is pale tan to cream, bruising deeply blue-green under minimal pressure.

Spore production is markedly reduced compared with standard P. cubensis varieties — a trait attributed to the persistent veil — and mature specimens are consequently heavier and denser per unit volume than comparable fruits.

§ 02Origin & Naming

The Penis Envy lineage is widely attributed to Terence McKenna's Amazonian collections of the 1970s. Community accounts credit the mycologist Steven Pollock with isolating and stabilising the distinctive phenotype, after which it passed through hobbyist circles for several decades before achieving widespread distribution.

The vulgar epithet is descriptive rather than taxonomic and has been inherited without modification through subsequent sub-lineages (Albino Penis Envy, Penis Envy Uncut, and similar derivatives).

§ 03Cultivation Temperament

Colonisation is noticeably slower than standard P. cubensis varieties, and contamination during extended run times is a recurring hazard; rigorous sterile technique is advised. Substrate preference follows the species norm (grain spawn into CVG or equivalent) but tolerance of suboptimal conditions is reduced relative to hardier varieties such as B+ or Golden Teacher.

Because spore prints are sparse and unreliable, propagation is typically conducted via liquid culture or agar transfer from vigorous sectors.

§ 04Safety Profile

As with all psilocybin-containing species, Penis Envy carries significant contraindications. Psilocybin is a serotonergic compound and interacts with a range of medications and mental-health conditions.

⚠ Contraindications

Penis Envy has a reputation for above-average tryptamine content; dosing by weight using estimates derived from standard P. cubensis varieties may significantly underestimate effect. Begin with markedly reduced quantities. Not suitable for individuals with personal or family history of psychotic disorders, schizophrenia, or bipolar I; those taking SSRIs, MAOIs, or lithium; pregnant or breastfeeding persons; or those with unmanaged cardiovascular conditions. Always review the full safety codex before use.
